FAQ "What is the difference between a natural stone, a lab created stone or a synthetic stone"
This is a commonly asked question by many customers. Its is not easy to tell the difference between these differing things but perhaps I can shed some light on this subject
First a natural stone is one that comes out of the ground in a Crystaline state. It will be cut and polished into a gemstone. Such stones will have natural flaws that identify it as natural, Heat treating to stablize the color, filling with glass or a plastic to heal cracks/flaws called inclusions, or using wax to seal open inclusions and keep natural moisture within the stone, are normal practices within the jewelry industry. Such treatments should always be disclosed to a buyer.
"Lab Grown" or "Lab Created" gemstones are real gemstones, they are made of the same materiels as natural stones and grown in a laboratory under extreme heat and pressure, excellerating the process that took many thousands of years into a few months. These stones are most often internally flawless, have perfect color and size of crystal for cutting. Comparing the natural vs the labgrown is like comparing a wild fruit to one that is greenhouse grown where all of the enviromental issues are perfectly controled. They are chemically the same, therefore if two stones of like size were placed on the scale they would share the same carat weight. However lab grown stones are often too perfect and under a microscope can often be detected. Because heat can cause a color chage, I reccoment that heat never be used to size or repair a peice if you suspect that the stones are lab created.
"Simulated" or "Synthetic" or "Paste" gemstones are artifically created stones using a glass paste that is heated like glass in molds. ( for example "rhinestones")The can also be grown in labs, like Cubic Zirconium or CZ which is a trade name for a type of artificial diamonds. These can be fun beautiful alternatives for Fashion Jewelry. In the trade, it is against ethics to use the term "Fine Jewery" when this sort of stone is present. When in doubt you err on the side of caution. Fashion Jewelry because of the unknowns involved should never be heated therefore repairing or sizing is not reccomended
